“Ustedes son un ejemplo de que cuando la patria llama, el hijo acude, sin condiciones y sin reservas”.
Panama, January 19th, 2018. “Today you are living a milestone in the national history [of Panama]. And the most wonderful thing is that this is becoming a sign of hope to those who dwell in this country.”
These were the first words of the Archbishop of Panama, Jose Domingo Ulloa Mendieta, during his appearance at the signing meeting of the agreement between the Catholic Church and the national news agencies in order to formalize their support to the World Youth Day.
On this particular occasion, Bishop Ulloa highlighted that “representatives of the main national news agencies, which compete permanently in the commercial sector for the latest scoops, publicity and journalistic talent, show us that by signing this agreement, unity on the greatest national issues is possible”
“This is an example of: when the homeland demands, the child responds in haste, with no conditions and no reserves”, added the Metropolitan Archbishop, after stating that “with this signature you also affirmed to the worldwide youth that you are willing to be together in order to create possibilities and opportunities for them to construct, as protagonists, a better society”.
WYD Director of Communication, Eduardo Soto, explained that the agreement foresees that “[news agencies] will offer their editorial space, advertising, bulletins, and digital platforms as a forum so that the country and the world can stay informed and engaged in relation to the greater themes of WYD.
