PANAMA – February 11th 2018.
Today His Holiness Pope Francis registered himself as the first pilgrim for World Youth Day Panama 2019. Thus formally begins the registration process for pilgrims who will be coming to attend this international event.
After praying the Angelus from his balcony in St. Peter’s Square, the Holy Father filled out his personal information and officially registered through the online portal, continuing the tradition from the previous WYD.
Registration officially opens today for the thirty-fourth World Youth Day, which will take place in Panama in January of 2019.
When this news was released in Panama, Archbishop Jose Domingo Ulloa Mendieta, president of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), remarked, “I was made aware of the wonderful news of finding out that the first pilgrim, Pope Francis, has registered. We are overjoyed.”
“We appreciate this gesture on this day which is the celebration of Our Lady of Lourdes. What I understand from the context the Holy Father gives us is that Mary has a message for all Panamanians, which is that we shall not be afraid,” added the Archbishop.
Registration for pilgrims from all over the world will be open as of 8:00 AM (Panama time) on February 12th, 2018, according to information provided by Victor Chang, Executive Secretary of the LOC.
Detailed instructions for the registration process will be in the five official languages of WYD, however the registration system will not operate in Portuguese.
